Trust is not a soft leadership concept. It is the structural support that allows a school community to move forward together.

In my article, “Bridging the Gap of School Trust,” I use the image of a suspension bridge to explore the essential components of trusted school leadership: a strong foundation of beliefs and values, meaningful support systems, flexibility, shared ownership, healthy culture, clear communication, and consistent leadership practices.

Research continues to affirm what many of us have experienced firsthand: when trust is high, schools see stronger relationships, healthier cultures, greater staff retention, improved parent and community confidence, and better student outcomes.

But trust does not happen accidentally. It must be intentionally built, strengthened, and maintained.

For school leaders, the question is not simply, “Are we leading?” The deeper question is, “Are we building the kind of trust that allows people to cross the bridge with us?”
