In this Authority Magazine interview, I was asked to reflect on “5 Things That Should Be Done To Improve The U.S. Educational System.” Though the article was published in 2021, the core message remains deeply relevant today: meaningful school improvement begins with trust.
We can talk about curriculum, facilities, technology, accountability, and innovation, and all of those matter. But the strongest schools are still built on trusted relationships among school leaders, teachers, parents, students, and the broader community.
A few priorities I continue to believe are essential:
Parents must be viewed as partners, not clients or adversaries.
Teachers and school leaders need professional support, autonomy, and trust.
Schools must keep mission, values, and student formation at the center of decision-making.
Transparency is essential if we are going to rebuild confidence in education.
And above all, effective educators must listen well, simplify the complicated, empower others, and “keep the main thing the main thing.”
The future of our communities is walking the halls of our schools today. That means our work as educators and leaders is not merely organizational—it is deeply human, deeply relational, and deeply consequential.
